The area west of the Gemmenich tunnel could be a true wilderness at times. Here 5540 leads an intermodal up from Aachen in sweet evening light. That's the west-most German signal in the distance. The signs denote a mandatory brake test for eastbound trains.
Crossrail DE 6309 leads containers eastbound over the Remersdaal viaduct. The red patch on the engine's flank is a job advertisement for vacant engineer positions.
7782 and sister have a trainload of automobiles in tow as they split the first set of Belgian signals west of Gemmenich tunnel. The class 77 road switchers were never too common on the L24. Seeing them surrounded by vivid springtime colors on the trees was an additional treat.
