Night shots taken at the Garzweiler II lignite pit. Garzweiler II is one of the largest lignite strip mines in Europe, located just north-west of Cologne, Germany. The operator, RheinBraun, uses very large wheel excavators to remove overburden and mine the lignite which is consumed by a number of power plants in the vicinity.
